I fully agree with the idea to have the banning of abortion entrenched in the Constitution, a matter that was discussed at length last year but which seems to have been put aside over the last months.

In fact, I was quite pleased to read (TMID, 6 February) that the Gift Of Life group is still trying to put pressure on the government to continue with its move to have the banning of abortion within our Constitution.

As Children’s Commissioner Sonia Camilleri said, the issue should move forward as soon as possible “as it seems to be at a standstill. Children cannot wait.”

The fact that members of both sides of the House of Representatives were present at the “walk of life” organised last Sunday shows that both sides are totally against abortion. So one wonders what is keeping the matter from being discussed in Parliament so that, sooner rather than later, the banning of abortion becomes part and parcel of our Constitution.

I am afraid that with the election looming in two years’ time, the government will no longer feel the urge to debate such a subject as matters of a more political nature will crop up. So I do hope that the issue is tackled in the coming months, hopefully before Parliament rises for the summer recess.
