Commonwealth Games News – Shooting: Maltese shooters carry high hopes

Malta Independent Thursday, 9 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Maltese shooters will once again represent our country at the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next March.

Traditionally the Maltese athletes have always performed well, reaching high scores among world class shooters. Among others France Pace entered the finals in Trap at Wolf Creek, Victoria, Canada 1994, finishing sixth place while William Chetcuti managed to grab Bronze in Bisley at the last Games. One also has to mention the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in India in 1995 where Horace Micallef won Bronze 123/125 and together with Frans Pace won Gold in the Team Event.

The Maltese athletes participating at these Games qualified after a series of selection shoots organized by the Malta Shooting Federation in all the shooting disciplines.

The Athletes that reached the requested Minimum Qualifying Score to participate at these Games by the MOC are Cardona Stanley and Pace Francis in TRAP and Chetcuti William and Micallef Rodney in Double Trap. Another shooter in Trap will be Rebecca Madyson (nee Attard) who since last year has been shooting for Malta.

She participated at the Commonwealth Champion-

ships last March in the same event finishing sixth place after the finals.

All our lads and also the lass know their opponents very well as we encounter them at all the International Events abroad.

These are all professional shooters whose job is travelling the world competing in their respective discipline.

After the Yuletide rest our male shooters started again their scheduled training programme which also included a training camp with the UK Shooting Team at Bidnija, while Beck is training under her father’s supervision down in Lilydale, Melbourne, the same grounds where shooting will take place.

The Maltese squad will managed by Saviour Portelli, President of the MSF, while the coach is Mr. John Mary Bugeja.
