City Gate Remedy

Malta Independent Saturday, 11 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

While appreciating Brian Philp’s admiration of our archaeological heritage and sharing his concern at the continued neglect of City Gate (TMID, 9 February), I cannot concur with his “instant remedy” for the Gate. He suggests a general clean up and some embellishment.

The instant remedy required of the situation is its speedy demolition. Its presence has haunted us for far too long. It should be replaced with sensitivity by a gate in keeping with the unique 16th century fortifications that encircle Valletta, of which it is an integral part.

A sine qua non should also be the preservation of the narrow early 1600’s Tumas Dingli stone-vaulted arches that bridge the ditch to the gate. This bridge, which enemy bombing failed to destroy, survives beneath the present much widened structure.

We should not allow modern times to destroy it.
