The Euro coins

Malta Independent Saturday, 11 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

I tend to disagree with having a religious figure represented on euro coins.

Although many Maltese seem to think otherwise, as seen by the amount of votes picked up by the Baptism of Christ representation in the recent public poll, I fail to understand why we should always include religion in anything we do as a nation.

Of course, we are a country with a strong religious background, but I cannot understand that this should come into our money matters too.

Let us not forget that there should be a distinction between religious and economic values. They should, in my opinion, be kept separate.

Apart from this, the Baptism of Christ statue is not something that immediately identifies Malta. I believe that we should go for other representations that would immediately make the link to Malta such as, for example, the Maltese Cross, which is a symbol that is recognised all over.
