The Departure tax

Malta Independent Tuesday, 14 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Last Wednesday the Prime Minister told a public meeting that the government would reconsider reducing or removing the departure tax if it reaches its financial targets for this year.

I do hope that this unjust tax, which has led to fewer Maltese travellers, is removed completely. It is rather strange that there are flights that are less expensive than the departure tax itself.

If the government wants more people to travel abroad to enrich their experience, it should do away with the tax immediately, and not wait till the end of the year to do so.

After all, most Maltese travel in summer for their holidays and therefore it would be quite unfair to leave the tax as it is until the budget.
