Pensions Reform

Malta Independent Wednesday, 15 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Last week, the Prime Minister announced that an announcement on the pension reform will be made “in the coming days” (TMID, 10 February).

A lot has been said about the pensions reform and the need for the matter to be seen to quickly. A lot of time has been wasted as reports were drawn up and discussed. I hope that we have not already missed the boat.

The reform in the pensions needs to be carried out as quickly as possible.

Otherwise, I am afraid that future generations will suffer greatly. People close to retirement age will probably not have to worry, but those still in their early 40s or younger might find themselves in great difficulty when their turn will come to receive a pension.

I urge the government to get on with it. The pensions reform cannot wait any longer. It is an issue that we cannot sweep under the carper any longer.
