Rugby Union: Magnificent Malta Turn defeat into great win in Rome game

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Malta A, the representative side made up from the local Cisk Lager League players, went to Rome and conquered Accademia Roma, the side who are currently leading the Italian Serie B, and strong contenders for promotion to Serie A.

Accademia set off strongly, scoring unconverted tries in the 7th, 15th and 25th minutes to open up a daunting 15-0 lead, although this was against the run of play which was evenly matched.

Undemoralised, Malta stuck to their plan and kept their pattern of play, keeping up the pressure. By the 30th minute it paid off and Sean Doublesin played a typical quick tap penalty under the posts to score a trademark opportunist try, converted by Rod Attard - 15-7 at half time.

The second half saw Malta take control of the game, and make a remarkable comeback. Prop Mifsud scored a try off a ruck on the line, then Satariano made one of his typical elusive, side-stepping runs to score in the corner, not converted by Attard.

Finally Robert Bonavia took the ball off a tap penalty earned by hard forward pressure and ran over with three men hanging on him, trying to pull him down.

After the first burst by Accademia, Malta's defence was rock solid, which is so important in winning rugby matches.

All in all a great display by a team which was lacking five full internationals who were unavailable, but were replaced by rising young players and reflects the striking improvements being made under the guidance of Damian Neill, the national director of Rugby. It also emphasises the hard work of A team manager Neil Galea and assistant coach Steve Busuttil. Above all it highlights the enthusiasm and ability of the Maltese and justifies the generous sponsorship of Gasan Mamo Insurance for the trip.
