It was pouring cats and dogs but the people didn’t notice.

The air was as cold as the Titanic iceberg must have been but the people did not mind it. They worked to overcome the shivers because they just had to be there.

The people in Hamrun gathered there because they want to be free from the pain they are suffering. They actually felt as if they were being cleansed listening to Dr Alfred Sant talking about the future of a Labour government.

They have all suffered under the Nationalist experience. Loss of jobs, massive cost of living increases and other factors have made their life difficult. The long waiting list to undergo an operation and juvenile delinquency on the rise are just two other examples.

It was an awesomely breath-taking moment when the Opposition Leader read out the list of items on the Labour Party’s agenda once the Labour Party is returned to

government.

The struggles of the worker, single parent, widow, unemployed, etc. were etched on the faces of everyone who was present.

Those present were there because of the frustration and pain they are experiencing because the Nationalist government is keeping a long distance away from them.

What makes a good government is the commitment and duty to serve one’s country and people well by providing for them instead of taking from them in terms of taxes. Our government is living in a dormant state with a motto of “take, take, take” and never “give, give, give”.

That is why people from all walks of life opted to gather in their thousands at Hamrun on 12 February. They are sick of promises. They want someone to deliver. Only the Labour Party can end this painful time after the instability of a Nationalist government.
