In Defence of me

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

I think Ms Josephine Vella did not quite get my point (TMIS, 12 February). Not that I have any problem with Ms Vella disagreeing with me; like everybody else, she has the right to her own opinion and it would be dull if we all shared the same tastes, likes and views!

Having said that, I do not think I discussed Graziella’s beauty, gorgeousness or the like. I simply did not like the way she was – she has changed a lot now – waving her hands about and pointing her forefinger. That is not acceptable whoever does it and Graziella seems to have realized this now and is not overdoing it like before.

However, what is more monotonous, is the droning of the continuous use of the word ‘gewwa’, which seems to haunt all local media personnel. Unfortunately, the blatant misuse of several words is really damaging and it is butchering our language. I am more than flabbergasted that nobody has ever done anything to save the Maltese language in spite of the numerous comments in the press.

Ms Vella’s last sentence proves that she really misunderstood me. Constructive criticism is not a discouragement; it should be taken – and this was my only intention – as help to improve performance. It is my great wish to see local broadcasting get better. I have worked in broadcasting and I can assure you various things were much different and better then, in spite of the primitive equipment as one could see the professionalism and hard efforts put in by all those concerned.
