I believe that such a reform is needed and that it should start as quickly as possible so that the problems that are envisaged can be tackled as from now.

It is a known fact that given that people are living longer thanks to an improved lifestyle and medical breakthroughs while, at the same time, the birth rate is dwindling. This would mean that in the future there will be fewer workers to “pay” for the pensions of those people who retire.

With this in mind, a reform in the pensions system is a must and the government is doing well to tackle the situation now. The opposition seems to be putting the issue on the back-burner but I believe that they should also contribute on the subject, considering that the Malta Labour Party could itself be facing the problem if it is in government.

Unless the matter is tackled, we could end up with a situation that future pensioners will have so little to rely on and this would mean that their standard of living will drastically drop once they reach retirement age.
