85 Per cent score for Ghaxaq local council

Malta Independent Friday, 24 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Labour-led Ghaxaq local council fulfilled 85 per cent of the promises it made three years ago, Labour leader Alfred Sant said on a visit to the village yesterday.

The council invested in education by buying new furniture for the library and adding new books to the collection, Dr Sant said, adding that the library was now open for longer hours and providing subsidized photocopying services.

The council also organised courses for children and courses in old trades for adults.

“The council completed the refurbishment of the village square at a cost of Lm36,000, repaired roads at a cost of Lm30,000 and spent Lm10,000 to repair pavements. New pavements were built at a cost of Lm5,000, and two roads – G. M. Dalli and Birzebbuga streets - were built at a cost of Lm12,000,” the Labour leader said.

The council had also improved the domestic waste collection system and provided a bulky refuse service.

He said that a new Labour-led council would continue to invest in education by organising more courses for residents and it would insist on using the primary school building after school hours.

“Labour councillors will work to improve sport facilities in the village by upgrading the football pitch in the Andar area. They will also work on road maintenance and put pressure on the government to install drainage services in areas where these do not exist.

He added that a Labour-led council would continue to provide residents with the opportunity to pay their water, electricity and telephone bills at the council’s offices.

Mayor Joseph Abdilla said the council has published a book on the history of Ghaxaq.
