GWU Files judicial protest

Malta Independent Friday, 24 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The rights of the employees of the Runway Bistro and Gateway Diner must be safeguarded if the contract for the management of the two establishments changes hands, the General Workers’ Union said yesterday.

In a judicial protest filed against the Malta International Airport plc, the GWU made reference to the tendering process currently under way for the management of the Runway Bistro and Gateway Diner.

At present, Corinthia Caterers are running the two restaurants and therefore the union filed the protest to safeguard the employees’ interests if the contract changes hands after the tendering process.

The GWU requested that the bids being made must reflect the prospective management’s obligations towards the employees in accordance with the law. The union also asked for discussions to begin once the tender is awarded.

If this is not done, the GWU said it will hold MIA plc responsible for any damage caused to the union or to the workers it represents.

The protest was filed by Dr Aron Mifsud Bonnici.
