Carnival is one of our liveliest traditions. We try to keep this tradition alive because it’s part of our history and culture.

Carnival started in 1535 in Vittoriosa. Grandmaster Lascaris stopped it for a while and people were angry. Now, Carnival takes place in Valletta. In Valletta Square, people dance the traditional dance of Great Siege. Some people dress up as Maltese and others as Turks.

Freedom Square in Valletta is prepared with seating for people to watch the floats on Carnival Day. Merry-making takes place during Carnival. People like to wear fancy costumes and children like to wear Walt Disney characters’ costumes. Most teenagers like to wear masks which are grotesque.

There are even traditional sweets, such as the prinjolata and sweet almonds (perlini). When people watch floats, they like to eat some sweet almonds.

It is important to keep in mind that when we are celebrating an occasion such as Carnival, we must still look after our national heritage.
