Cultural Tour in Vittoriosa

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Next Sunday’s Cultural Tour, organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, will take place in Vittoriosa and Kalkara. The main feature of the tour will be visiting the many houses in the old city of Vittoriosa, which were said to be haunted by evil spirits. Among these are the buildings which housed the Auberge d’Angleterre and the Auberge of the League of France, which will be toured.

In Kalkara the group will visit the historical Fort Rinella, which was built in 1878 by the British. The fort was the most technologically advanced war machine of its day. It was one of four 100-ton gun batteries built in Malta and Gibraltar for the protection of the harbours. At Fort Rinella, visitors will assist to a lively historical re-enactment with 19th century Victorian soldiers.

Participants will be guided on an animated tour by the Tourist Guides Association around historical buildings and surroundings, in particular, houses which are known to be haunted by ghosts. The tour will also take participants to visit the Maritime Museum.

Cultural Tours are coordinated by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts with the collaboration of the Malta Tourism Authority and Heritage Malta.

Transport will leave Floriana (next to the Independence Monument) and Sliema (opposite Nazzarene Church) at 8.45am. Tickets are at Lm4.20 for adults and Lm3.30 for children and senior citizens.
