Lindsay Borg seems well prepared for the big day
As everyone might now be aware, the Malta Weightlifting Federation has nominated Lindsay Borg to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games starting in Melbourne, Australia, next Wednesday.
She now seems to be well prepared for the big day as it will be the first time she will be representing her country in the 75kg category.
When her selection was confirmed after she achieved the MQS as stipulated by the Malta Olympic Committee, Lindsay said: “I couldn’t ask for a bigger incentive than to represent my home country in front of my friends”.
Lindsay is a 23 year old Maltese/Australian. She has been lifting weights since the age of 14. She held the under 16 Australian records and the New South Wales under 16, 18 and 20 years open records in the Snatch, Clean and Jerk and Total. She placed second in the Australian Championships in 2000. She competed in the Weightlifting Small Nations championships held in Malta in June 2005.
The 75kg category is expected to be contested on Tuesday 21 March between 6.30pm and 9pm (Australian time).
Difficult draw for Joe Desira in the squash singles competition
Malta’s Joe Desira will have a difficult task in the first round of the Squash singles competition.
Desira, the only Maltese competitor, has been drawn to meet Guyana’s No. 1 Shawn Badrinath, who has been considered as one of the most improved players in the Caribbean area in the past two years.
From information, The Malta Independent has managed to collect, it transpires that Badrinath has been claiming a lot of success in that area, especially in 2004 and 2005.
Last year, for example, apart from retaining the national title, he won the Barbados Open where in the final, he ‘blew away’ the Number 4 seed, Steve Smith of Jamaica, 5-9, 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 in just 28 minutes. And that was his fourth straight Barbados Open title.
Last year, he helped Guyana earn third place overall in the Caribbean Senior Squash Championships that were held in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
In this event, Badrinath reached the final where he was eventually defeated by the number two seed, James Bullock of Jamaica 9-6, 6-9, 9-6, 9-7.
A good victory for Badrinath was registered in the final of the Barbados Open in 2004, where he defeated French No. 1 Johan Bouquet after their match went the full distance.
Desira, who won the gold medal at the 2003 Games for European Small States in Malta, will have to be at his very best to stand a chance against Guyana’s No. 1.
