Sedqa Promoting healthy lifestyle among youth

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Gearing up for National Youth Day, which locally is being celebrated on 21 March, Agenzija Sedqa is emphasising the vital role that young people play in society by empowering them to promote healthy lifestyles.

In an effort to create awareness, the agency is soliciting young people to organise, participate and contribute actively to promote such activities.

A half-day seminar with the theme “Youth participation in creating leisure for a healthy lifestyle” was organised by Sedqa, in conjunction with the Social Policy Commission within the University Student Council together with representatives from 15 student organisations.

The aim of this seminar was to explore how students, both in university, Mcast, and other institutions such as ITS and De La Salle Sixth Form, can actively participate in order to empower organisations to create leisure activities that promote healthy lifestyles.

Sedqa’s operations director Jean Claude Cardona said the seminar was a good opportunity to further develop the working relationship between sedqa and student organisations, in order to encourage youth to be active citizens aiming at a healthy lifestyle, free from substance abuse.

It was suggested that youth representatives should help in facilitating research vis-à-vis youth’s lifestyle, which could then be used to help young people live a healthy lifestyle.

This activity was supported by the National Youth Information Centre.
