Alex Borg is leading the highest break list in the European Team Championships at Carlow, Ireland. His 142 during the match against the Isle of Man is the highest on record so far, but he also managed a second century break, a 103, to confirm his current good moment.
During that match, he also scored other good breaks of 98, 74, 67 and 58. Simon Zammit also had good breaks of 67 and 57, while Guzi Grech had a 92 break in the match against Holland.
Meanwhile, the men’s team registered a 17-1 victory over the Isle of Man and was defeated by Holland, thus joining the same Holland and the Republic of Ireland 2 teams on 4 points at the top of the Group A standings. Belgium have two points and the Isle of Man still have to earn their first points.
In the match against Holland, Malta lost 12-6 as Borg figured in three 1-1 draws against Stefan Mazrocis, Mario Wehrmann and Johan Oenema. Guzi Grech lost 2-0 to Mazrocis and Oenema and drew 1-1 with Wehrmann, while Sammit lost 2-0 to Mazrocis and Oenema and beat Wehrmann 2-0.
Against the Isle of Man, they ran out easy winners, dropping just one frame in a 17-1 win. Alex Borg and Simon Zammit won all their frames against Paul Wilcock, Cameron Davies and Chris Dagnall, while Guzi Grech won his matches against Wilcock and Dagnall and dropped a point in a 1-1 draw with Davies.
Malta still has to play against the Republic of Ireland 2 this morning and the winner of the match will join Holland in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the seniors pair of Frans Mintoff and Tonio Mifsud beat France 8-0 with both players winning their two matches (four frames each) 2-0.
The victory enabled them to win the Group, but they still had to wait till late last night to know their opponents in the quarter-finals.
