I refer to the editorial with the above headline (TMID, 17 March).

I do tend to agree with the line taken that in Malta, the quality of television productions leaves much to be desired.

We tend to copy too much from what is taking place on other foreign television stations, but unfortunately we tend to copy badly.

You asked the question: “Are we sacrificing quality television in favour of popularity”. Unfortunately, the answer to that question is yes.

A popular television programme does not mean that it is of good quality. Of course, as you rightly said, quality is subjective and what pleases one viewer can displease another. But, on the whole, it must be admitted that the level of our productions is not up to standard.

The television stations should be more careful when they vet their programmes. It is not just a question of filling up air-time.
