Second consecutive medal for Chetcuti in Commonwealth Games
Maltese shooter William Chetcuti won the bronze medal in the double trap competition yesterday, giving Malta the second medal of these Commonwealth Games, after the silver medal won by Rebecca Madyson in the trap competition.
For William Chetcuti this was the second consecutive bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, after winning the bronze four years ago in the same competition in Manchester.
William Chetcuti was in second place after the first 150 clays, with a total of 139. Chetcuti hit 47 in the first round, 45 in the second and 47 in the third.

Indian Singh Rathore was in third place after the first phase with a total of 137 clays.
In the final barrage on 50 clays, William Chetcuti hit his lowest score with 40 clays, finishing in third place overall.
Indian Singh Rathore, silver medalist in Athens’ Olympics two years ago, won the gold medal hitting 44 clays in the barrage for a total of 141 clays, two more than Chetcuti. Silver medal went to South African Byron Swanton, who won the barrage event with 46 clays, for a total of 180 clays.
It is worth noting that Steven Walton who was leading the pack after the first phase, had a dismal performance in the barrage hitting only 29 clays from 50.
In the same competition the other Maltese shooter Rodney Micallef finished in 15th place overall with a total of 124 clays. Micallef had 40 hits in the first round, 42 in the second and another 42 in the third round. Rodney Micallef did not make it to the final barrage.
In the table-tennis singles event, Simon Gerada was eliminated in the round of 16 by Australian William Henzell. In the round of 32 match played in the morning Simon Gerada beat Nigerian Jegede Tajudeen 4-2. Gerada was trailing 1-2 after losing the first and third game with the same score 6-11, and winning easily the second game 11-1.
Gerada won three consecutive games, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-5 to book a place in the next round.
In the match against Henzell, the Maltese player had a promising start winning the first two games 11-5, and 13-11. However the Maltese player had to bow out of the competition as Henzell won four consecutive games 7-11, 9-11, 8-11 and 9-11, to beat Simon Gerada 4-2.
The table-tennis doubles team failed to play in their game of round 16 against England. It is understood that Wayne Gerada, Simon’s brother and partner in the team, was unfit to play, and England were given a walk-over and an easy passage with the last eight.
