The first Malta Squash tournament of 2006 took place last weekend at the Cynergi powered by Eurosport health & fitness studio, St Julian’s.
The ‘A’ event, for players in national league 5 or higher was dominated by ex-national team player Mark Lupi.
Lupi, who had an exciting semi-final against Karl Grech Orr, played defending champion Ivan Balzan in the final.
Lupi played a fast but controlled game and eventually defeated Balzan 3-1. With three ex-national team players all reaching the semi-finals the new up and coming national team players all have a lot of work to do if they are to successfully step in the footsteps of the ‘old guard’
The ‘B’ event, for players in national league 6 or lower, was won for the first time by Massimo Angilleri. Angilleri is slowly moving up the national league and will soon be facing much tougher opposition as he progresses from the ‘B’ to the ‘A’ event. In a slightly one-sided contest, Angilleri defeated Alex Scerri in the final.
Malta Squash PR secretary Gail Dunkerley (pictured with Mark Lupi) presented both event winners with a trophy and thanked everyone concerned at Cynergi for their help and support.
The next Malta Squash tournament is on Saturday 8 April at LivingWell, Hilton.
