The Pension reform

Malta Independent Monday, 27 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The government has announced plans to reform the pension system. One of the ideas is to gradually increase the retirement age to 65.

I think it is rather unfair for young people, those who have just started to work, to know that their working life will be at least four years longer than the one of the workers aged 50.

I use the word at least because I am afraid that in 20 years’ time who is to guarantee us that this will not be raised to 70?

Workers reaching retirement age look forward to the time they will have with their families and with their grandchildren after many years of hard work. The increase in retirement age will now deprive them of this joy.
