I would like to congratulate the government, and especially Minister Austin Gatt, following the recent signing of the heads of agreement with Tecom Investments, which will lead to the building of SmartCity@Malta.
It is this kind of investment that the country needs. Such a project will bring in millions of liri and at the same time create over 5,000 jobs.
It is on the latter part that I raise a word of caution. I believe that the country, as it is now, is not geared to provide so many workers in the IT sector. The authorities concerned should start planning as from now for what will happen from 2008 onwards – that is when workers for this kind of job will be needed.
I do hope that the government will be doing its utmost, through its educational institutions, to see that Maltese workers will be available for such jobs.
It would be a pity if we would have such a lovely media and IT city with few Maltese workers employed there.
