A Convert to politics

Malta Independent Sunday, 9 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

I would like to comment on the last part of the interview where the newly elected mayor of Msida Alex Sciberras stated that the outgoing council did nothing for three years and attempted to mend all its ills in the final month preceding the election (TMIS, 19 March).

The facts prove otherwise. The coucil did miracles with the funds allocated to it and a look at Msida will bear this out. Various structural projects and other necessary works were carried out during the Council’s tenure.

As regards suitable premises for the Council, there already exist plans and a permit, and a builder and Lm40,000 allocated for the building of Council premises, therefore work can start straight away.

As regards Conception Street, the old water pipes are being replaced and the street will be properly resurfaced for the first time in ages.

As regards the l-Ghajn tal-Hasselin, Msida Local Council spent thousands on its refurbishment due to the sorry state and utter neglect it was left in by the Labour government. There is a plaque to prove what I am saying. It is refurbished and well kept.

It is very easy to criticise others but the proof of one’s worth is when one delivers. Words are easy to mouth.

As regards exerting pressure on the government to start work to deal with the perennial problems caused by flooding and the inconvenience caused by the St Luke’s incinerator, my Council did just that and plans were drawn up to tackle these problems by the Central Government.

I wish the incoming mayor well.

Former Msida Mayor
