St Patrick 0

St George’s 1

League leaders St George's made a step closer to Premier football when they beat St Patrick thanks to a solitary goal scored in the first half.

The match was very balanced with St George's showing the better ideas in the first half, with St Patrick coming back strongly in the second half, with Andrea Gatt in the St George's goal finishing as their hero saving a penalty three minutes from time.

St George's had their first attempt from Bonello, saved by goalkeeper Mintoff. On ten minutes Thomas Caruana had his only shot at goal with the ball going over the crossbar.

On 28 minutes the league leaders took the lead when Johan Spiteri half-volleyed from the edge of the area with the ball finishing in the corner of the net.

St Patrick’s best effort came from defender and captain Robert Cassar with his dipper missing the target.

In the second half St Patrick were the better team as they surged forward in search of the equaliser. Thomas Caruana shot slightly wide following a Costa Brazilino move. On 53 minutes a Michael Zerafa shot destined for the back of the net was cleared off the line by Jesmond Delia, and four minutes later goalkeeper Andrea Gatt dived to deflect a grounder by Thomas Caruana.

St Patrick continued to press to obtain the equaliser, with their best chance coming three minutes from time when Gilbert Scerri was brought down by Larry Lagana, but from the resultant penalty, goalkeeper Gatt effected a brilliant save off Thomas Caruana's angled effort.

Marsa 2

San Gwann 2

San Gwann continued with their revival, following their 2-1 win over Tarxien, as yesterday they held promotion aspirants Marsa to a 2-2 draw. It was a fair result in a spectacular match, surely one of the best this season.

Marsa thus failed to join (temporarily) St George's at the top of the standings. As usual, Gilbert Martin was one of their best players, with Bencini and Darren Vella outstanding at the back. For San Gwann veteran Kevin Loughborough was the inspiration of the side.

Marsa took the lead on ten minutes when Gilbert Martin beat Spiteri with a good shot following a Brandon Zammit cross from the right.

Marsa's joy was shortlived as San Gwann equalised three minutes later through Karl Sciberras who beat Ivan Casha with a low shot. Two minutes later Marsa were unlucky, when a Joseph Casha shot was deflected by a San Gwann defender with the ball hitting the crossbar.

On 34 minutes Marsa were back in front when Brandon Zammit beat a hesitant Stacey Vella in defence to beat Justin Spiteri with a low diagonal shot.

On 54 minutes San Gwann were back on level terms with a brilliant Anizoba-Loughborough move, with Penza crossing to Karl Sciberras who equalised with a fierce drive. Three minutes later a Joseph Casha header was cleared off the line by Vella Critien.

Karl Sciberras missed the hat-trick when his low shot missed the base of the upright with Marsa going near with Casha and Martin.

San Gwann finished the match with ten players when substitute Vince Camilleri was sent off for dissent.
