Cartwright’s sharp, quick fire evocation of English pub life will be brought to life for the first time in Malta by Unifaun Theatre at St James Cavalier on the 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 April.
“Strangely enough, this will also be the first time a Cartwright play will be produced in Malta,” commented Adrian Buckle, artistic director of Unifaun Theatre. “Jim Cartwright has written some very good plays, Two and Road being memorable state of the art pieces.”
The action takes place in one night, in a pub, in the North of England and charts the dysfunctional relationship of Landlord and Landlady, presiding over a public house full of colourful, tragic and intriguing characters. There’s Mr Iger, henpecked by his Led Zeppelin-loving wife; Fred and Alice who met at the “centre”, who enjoy their films and their pints; and the Boy who just “wants his dad”, among others.
First performed at the Bolton Octagon in 1989, the Sunday Times called the play a “brilliantly, surrealistically and comically poetic” piece, and the Bolton Octagon production won the Manchester Evening Best New Play Award and transferred to the Young Vic in London.
The actors in the Maltese production are Edward Mercieca (famous for his pantomime roles and last year’s successful Stones in His Pocket) and Pia Zammit (also well known for her theatre work in Malta). “With these two actors executing the scenes, laughter is guaranteed,” were Buckle’s final comments.
Tickets are available from St James Cavalier box office or on telephone number 21 223 216 or by email to [email protected].
The Friday 21 April show will be sold at a special first night concessionary price.
