‘Footloose’… Raw energy

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

YADA’s eagerly awaited annual production is here! For some, 13 might be considered unlucky, but for YADA this number represents 13 consecutive successes, huge spectacles that generate enthusiasm that dance wise is unprecedented. For six nights YADA will fill the Mediterranean Conference Centre with pure magic!

Having danced last November for Queen Elizabeth and Heads of State here for the CHOGM, YADA’s production of Footloose will undoubtedly give this 1984 blockbuster a vibrant, new lease of life!

Kevin Bacon was the protagonist; Sarah Jessica Parker was then just a young star in the making. Jeans were high waisted and tight, hair was big and shoulder pads were considered sexy.

The music is from the original soundtrack and includes hits that were MTV’s first video ‘monsters’. Let’s Hear It For The Boy, Its’ a Heartache, Heart of Glass, Ring My Bell, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Almost Paradise and obviously the theme song Footloose. These are just a few of the tunes that the audience will be humming, singing and dancing to!

Based on a true story, it tells of a town in southwest America that prohibited public dancing. Anyone caught wiggling to popular music was prosecuted. It might sound absurd, but it is a fact. A rebellious boy from Chicago by the name of Ren McCormick changes all that and together with local rebels, initiates a protest to abolish this outmoded ban and crush this small town’s narrow mindedness, which runs almost parallel to the island we inhabit...

Footloose is directed by Felix Busuttil, who also composed the choreography assisted by Justin Roy Barker, Vivienne Fielding Refalo, Alison Bird and Kristina Schranz.

Set design by Harry Borg, costumes and wardrobe by Malta’s top designers Charles and Ron of Beatrix and a cast of over 200 dancers accompanied by established singers Chiara, Claudette Pace, Olivia Lewis, Claudia Faniello, Debbie Scerri, Glenn Vella, J. Anvil and renowned drag artist Georgina Streisand.

The well-known actress Marylu Coppini is acting director and will also play the part of Vi, while Colin Willis will play the role of her husband, the Reverend Shaw.

Main acting and dancing parts will be played by Catherine Strawbridge, Simon DeMarco, Ritianne Sacco, Daron Galea, Vivienne Fielding Refalo and Felix Busuttil. Light design by Nexos Lighting Co. supported by Wave Enterprises for sound.
