The editorial Road Management (TMID, 24 April) was really worth reading.

An important point among the editor’s comments was that one wants to travel from one place to the other in the least possible time. I might add “safely”.

Unfortunately no reference was made to the ridiculous speed limits that are cropping up these days along our roads.

A case in point the speed camera on the new road from Zebbug to Rabat is 70 km per hour.

Outside built-up areas (like the road going down to Ghar Lapsi) the speed limit is 80 km/h.

I took a look on the Malta Transport Authority website for the Ten-T projects funded by the EU. Apart from the huge amounts of money involved in these projects, nothing is impressive.

For example the new bridge joining Tal-Qroqq tunnels to Sta Venera Tunnels is not even planned straight. But then, who cares? For the 48 per cent of Maltese who have never travelled abroad and don’t intend to, the important thing is to have a good surfaced road.
