How right was Daphne Caruana Galizia in her long article, The money grubbers (TMID, 20 April).

Yes, wardens throughout the island are all-out to pick on any driver who breaks any traffic law. Every driver on the road can tell you many a story on how he was handed a traffic fine. But when it comes to heavy vehicles, the same wardens turn a blind eye. They are allowed to cover all those behind them with clouds of black exhaust or with dust and debris.

How many bus drivers were ever given a ticket for not using the bus-bay properly? For all these offences, wardens do not play the “cat and mouse” game, hiding round corners or behind trees, as they do with small car drivers.

I tell Daphne to be very careful when going to Standard Publications House in St Julian’s. Just in front of it, there is a traffic light system. All those coming from San Gwann have two lanes to choose from, one going to Ta’ Giorni and the other to Sliema. Quite often, wardens park at the corner of Standard Publications House and from there, they jot down every driver who happens to cross over to Sliema from the Ta’ Giorni lane.

Why do wardens hide in their cars and not stand at the junction where they can be seen? No wonder drivers are not fined on the spot but receive their tickets by post!

As Daphne rightly said, “the responsible authority issued instructions to wardens that tickets were to be handed directly to the person committing the offence, at the time the offence was committed. But being “money grubbers”, they do not bother not obeying orders”.
