ADT Recommends ‘going for a drive’

Malta Independent Thursday, 4 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The ADT advertisement with the absurd caption “I’d much rather go for a drive than queue for my licence!” (TMID, 27 April) can only lead one to conclude that, as far as our Malta Transport Authority is concerned, it is fine for people to amuse themselves by “going for a drive” and needlessly burning up fuel in this age of

pollution and ill-health due to lack of physical exercise.

It is disappointing to see that the ADT persists in thinking only in terms of motor cars. The ADT remained true to type in its advertisement by implying that “going for a drive” is a valid leisure activity, thus encouraging people to needlessly use their car and condoning the unhealthy pastime of driving around aimlessly.

This advertisement was ill-conceived from both a health and an environmental point of view.

Surely the message in the advertisement would have been equally clear if the ADT had suggested a more wholesome pastime such as going for a walk, or (if one indulges in pure wishful thinking) going for a healthy bicycle ride on our wonderful network of cycle paths.
