The fifth Malta Football Awards are being held on 7 June at the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard. They are being sponsored by Melita Digital.
The Awards, now a prominent part of the annual local football calendar, are being organiSed after a sponsorship agreement was reached – it included an official partnership with Radio XFM and Vodafone Malta.
Sandro Micallef, chairperson of the Organising Committee, announced yesterday that there will be three new awards – Veteran player (over 36) Award, Best Player in the first division and Best Maltese player according to the public.
The awards being contested this year will be the following:
Best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder, best striker, most promising youngster, best coach, best foreign player, best Maltese player, best goal, best female player, best Futsal (first division) player, best Onvol GFA Div. I player, best Maltese player (public’s vote), best veteran player over 36, best first division player and award/s for a career.
This year’s award for the goalkeepers is being held this year in honour of former Floriana and Malta goalkeeper David Cluett. The winner will get two trophies, one from the organisers of the event, Events Services, and another from the Sportswriters Association, on whose initiative, the award is being made in honour of Cluett.
In the award for the Best Maltese player, the public is invited to express one’s opinion by voting through an SMS on 50614005. Those who take part will also have a chance to win one of several prizes to be raffled. Votes will be registered up till 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony on 7 June. The presentation is to be made by Powerade representatives.
Micallef said that those entitled to vote in these Awards will all be involved in local football. The ten Premier club presidents, the ten coaches and the ten team captains will all be invited to vote as will around 30 journalists who have followed the Premier League throughout the past season. The votes will be counted in public in front of Not Dr. Roberta Bisazza.
This fifth edition is being screened live on Melita Sports 1 and Sports Channel 47 as well as the Information Channel, which will be open to all.
The sponsors are Maltese Council for Sport, Corinthia Palace, Melita Digital, Vodafone Malta, Powerade, XFM, Bristow Potteries, Maltco Lotteries, Team Sports, Aristocrat, Alfred Gera and Sons Ltd, and others.
