Malta Independent Friday, 5 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

The police managed to successfully bring to an end weeks of investigation when they seized a total of five kilograms of cannabis resin ready to be sold.

During the operation, which involved a long, dangerous car chase from Marsaxlokk to Marsascala, the police arrested two men and a woman who are now in custody and assisting the police in their investigations.

The operation took place on Wednesday evening following several weeks of monitoring, when the police intercepted a car which they suspected was being used to traffic drugs. When they noticed that the police were following them, the men inside the car raced off and sped through the streets of Marsaxlokk.

During the chase, a car was rammed and a pedestrian was hit by the speeding vehicle. The police managed to stop the car in Marsascala where a 30-year-old man from Marsaxlokk and a 37-year-old man from Marsa were arrested.

The police searched the car where they found 4.5 kilograms of cannabis. Further searches yielded another half kilo of the drug. A woman from Marsaxlokk was also arrested.

Duty magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna was informed about the case.

He appointed several court experts to assist him with the magisterial inquiry.

The police said the men and the woman are expected to be charged in court in the coming days. Investigations continue.
