Sliema cannot afford to miss any of the three points against Msida this afternoon, if they are to retain their slight hopes of eventually retaining the title.
With two matches to go, the Blues are six points behind the Stripes who need only one point from their remaining two matches to clinch their second title in their 60-year history.
If Sliema win, Birkirkara will be hard pressed to earn the point they need from tomorrow’s match, though they will still be considered firm favourites to win the title.
However, nothing has to be taken for granted and both Sliema and Birkirkara will be expected to go all out for a victory in their respective matches.
The Stripes, however, are beset by several injury problems, and coach Stephen Azzopardi will have to reshuffle his midfield with George Mallia, Adrian Ciantar ruled out and with Roderick Briffa and Precious Monye being seriously doubtful starters.
Both Sliema and Birkirkara cannot expect any favours from their opponents.
In fact, although competitive interest for Msida and Hibs has waned, the Saints are still seeking their first historic win in the Championship Pool, while Hibernians are still keen to retain their best form for the Trophy which might save their season, apart from earning a berth in next season’s UEFA Cup.
And after Marsaxlokk’s victory over Valletta yesterday evening, it has become imperative for Sliema to win this afternoon as the southern seasiders continue challenging them for that runner-up place, which also means a UEFA Cup berth next season.
The Blues know that their last encounter is against Birkirkara while Marsaxlokk meet lowly Msida. And therefore anything can still happen in this year’s Premier League.
