‘Weeds’ At MITP, Valletta

Malta Independent Sunday, 7 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Five women, one proposition and a secret to be revealed... “The vilest deeds, like poison weeds, bloom well in poison air” – Oscar Wilde

Weeds will be staged today for the last time at the MITP, Valletta. The evening promises to be a delightfully morbid concoction, accompanied by a Musical Ensemble and a photographic exhibition inspired by the work itself.

Three eclectic women of quite different and eccentric temperaments, receive an enigmatic invitation from the devious Madame Edda Withers. Enticed by a promised revelation of a secret and outrageous proposition, these mismatched characters flock to Madame’s abode which is supervised by the mysterious and eerie Mrs Staunch – without knowing they are all stepping beyond a pre-set threshold only the shrewd-hearted can survive.

The characters' reactions to this carefully laid plan is a wickedly black humour grotesque concoction of wit, corruption and deviance. Inspired by selected poems of Edwardian poet Alfred Edward Housman, the play tries to look through the magnified lenses of 5 people at the omnipresent themes of life, death and corruption and how ultimately some things fail to break the circular evolution of life and the people who inhabit it.

Using the versatile black-box theatre at MITP, the piece relies on the exploration of space and relationships between characters. Using the bare minimum of props and set and original live music, it keeps things as clean and artistically economical as possible to ensure that the focus is never shifted from the pivot of this deceitful story: that is, the people inhabiting it.

The performance is accompanied by a mini-exhibition by up and coming photographer Andrew Rizzo who recently put up his first joint exhibition at Melita Galleries. Andrew will exhibit new work in a mini-collection of the themes and characters inspired by the play.

Doors will remain open for a few hours after the play to provide ample time for curious members of the audience to view Andrew’s interesting new pieces accompanied by a glass of wine from the MITP Bar

Tickets are being sold at St James Cavalier on 2122 3216 or [email protected]. Tickets cost Lm3.50 each and Lm3 for senior citizens.
