Europa Stamp issue on Integration

Malta Independent Sunday, 7 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The Philatelic Bureau of Maltapost is issuing a two-stamp set, part of the Europa series, on 9 May, Europe Day. This year's Europa theme is Integration.

Astrid Zammit designed this year’s set, which is offset printed by Printex Limited of Qormi on Maltese Crosses watermarked paper.

The intention behind both designs in this two-stamp set was to convey as clear a message as possible with the simplest of means. Since prehistory, stick figures were used as a figurative means of expression. The stick figures in the designs were given easily recognisable characteristics so as to represent different kinds of minorities, which the layman can identify at first glance and have fun interpreting. These include representatives from different kinds of minorities, such as people with special needs depicted by the blindfolded stick figure and the one with the wheelchair.

Other representations are of social minorities such as the homeless, as well as ethnic minorities. In both designs, the figures were drawn in such a way to transmit a happy, satisfied feeling.

This two-stamp set will be available from 9 May at all Maltapost outlets in Malta and Gozo, as a First Day Cover, in mint or cancelled format, and as a Souvenir Folder or Presentation Pack.
