A man was charged yesterday with stealing a Sony car stereo from a car parked in Vittoriosa and with insulting the police officers who caught him looking into cars on Tuesday evening.

Prosecuting officer Anthony Cassar said Eman Zammit, 26, from Zabbar, was seen peering into cars and as he was well-known to the police, they confronted him. He said the accused ran off and dropped a bag which contained the Sony stereo stolen from a Peugeot car.

Mr Zammit was also accused of breaching the peace and insulting police officials at Zabbar police station where he was held for questioning. He was also charged with relapsing.

Before magistrate Lawrence Quintano, Zammit pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. He was denied bail and was remanded in custody.

Police inspector Anthony Cassar prosecuted.
