The globality of football not only makes the game the number one sport in the world, but also the most complex in terms of administration and organisation.

Through the Malta Football Association’s role of promoting and regulating the game of association football in accordance with its Laws as promulgated by the International Football Association Board (IAFB), Maltese football is an integral and dynamic part of the vast network of a sport which has captured the imagination of innumerable followers around the world.

As a private, non profit-making organisation, the MFA seeks to develop, promote, and regulate football in the Maltese Islands. It exercises control and discipline over the sport, having jurisdiction over the registered players with the clubs, licenced coaches and referees, players’ agents as well as Member Clubs and Member Associations.

The association currently embraces 49 member clubs and member associations and other affiliated teams.

Through its democratic organs and several Boards, Committees and Commissions, the MFA, has the added onus of organising football competitions at different levels.

The MFA Council is the highest authority, while the Executive Committee and the Administration Committee (Bureau) are decision-making institutions which deal with different matters, including recommendations to the Council for decisions.

As an affiliated member of FIFA and UEFA, the MFA abides by its rules and regulations and seeks to promote the sport in accordance with those provisions found in the Statutes of the World and European Bodies.

The dynamic nature of the Malta FA, as far as its administrative functions are concerned, are reflected in its efforts to keep up with modern exigencies. The MFA Institutions Study Commission, recently set up for the purpose of updating its institutions to make them more in line with modern needs, is testimony of the foresight of the MFA.

The association is a member of the Malta Olympic Committee and, as such, seeks cooperation with this institution. It works hand in hand with the MOC to promulgate the ethics of sports in all forms and seeks to further the objectives of educating the public on the values of sport. This cooperation also extends to active participation in international events under the jurisdiction of the Olympic Movement, as was seen through Malta’s participation in football competitions during the Almeria 2005 Mediterranean Games. Such involvement by the MFA in these Games testifies to the spirit of cooperation there is between the Association and the MOC.
