GRTU Asks for decision on low cost airlines

Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises has called on the government to take a decision over whether low cost airlines should start operating to Malta.

The GRTU said that no airline was asking for a subsidy, but the government should ensure that airport authorities ran the airport on a competitive basis. It said that all airlines would benefit from such arrangements and it would result in more airlines bringing more tourists to Malta.

The chamber also called on the government to re-open negotiations with Ryanair.

It said that Ryanair was proposing a discount for the number of passengers it brought to Malta and this would be of benefit to everyone.
