Mobile Phones

Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A total of 35.1 million SMS were sent in March and around 14 million minutes were consumed on mobile networks (TMID, 10 May). This is further proof of the fact that people are becoming more dependent on their mobile phones.

I believe that this should spur both mobile operators in Malta to offer their subscribers better rates than the ones they enjoy at present.

Watching foreign television stations one can easily come across adverts for mobile companies. Some of these have offers that seem incredible, and yet these offers are never up for grabs in Malta. For example, there are companies that give out free mobile phones to new subscribers.

I think that local mobile phone operators should understand that, yes, they are there to make a profit, but also to provide a service. The

more people who use a mobile phone, the more profit these companies will make. By offering incentives, therefore, more people would be inclined to make use of their mobile phones.
