Springtime Hunting

Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Is it possible that most Maltese citizens’ dreams have come true, and spring hunting has been abolished? I ask this because for the past few days I have woken up to the birds’ twittering, and not to the usual hunters’ bang, bang at 5am! Not one “pop” was to be heard.

Could the reason for this brief peaceful springtime have anything to do with the European Parliament’s Petition Committee, which has graced our island to “see” things for itself? I bet if Messrs Libicki and Lawe were to go on their “secret” visits to the usual happy hunting grounds disguised as normal tourists or ordinary law-abiding Maltese, they would see hunters galore tending to the flora and fauna or playing chess.

I am sure that the abovementioned gentlemen are not so naïve as to believe that the peaceful spring days when they were here is the norm for the poor migrating birds and us law-abiding, long-suffering Maltese citizens and foreign visitors.

Let us hope that the 200,000 European signatures on the LRBPO petition, as well as the various other petitions against this barbaric pastime, will assist the European Parliament to convince our government to change the law in favour of the majority and protect the poor innocent lives of the migratory birds!
