Compensation For GWU member

Malta Independent Thursday, 18 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Hospitality and Food Section together with the Legal Department of the General Workers Union achieved another victory recently when an Industrial Tribunal ruled that a worker who was unjustly fired is entitled to compensation.

The case regards an employee with a factory who was fired after being accused of attacking another person, a union statement said. In his judgment, Dr Martin Fenech ruled that the employee’s dismissal was too hasty and that the company should have consulted the collective agreement which specifically states that the management should have consulted with the union before taking any disciplinary action.

The employee was assisted by Dr Marvic Debarro and by Josef Bugeja, Secretary of the GWU’s Hospitality and Food Division.
