Malta Independent Thursday, 18 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

An extension to the National Park in Salina was opened yesterday.

Around 1,000 trees have been planted on the land which had been abandoned before it was taken over by the government for one of it’s afforestation projects.

When the Salina project is completed, the total area will be five times that of Kennedy Grove as it is today.

The park will include a wetland zone, a recreation area for picnics, games area and a garden, part of which has been sponsored by go mobile.

Rurals Affairs and the Environment Minister George Pullicino thanked go mobile and encouraged other companies to contribute towards the planting of trees around the island.

Mr Pullicino said the afforestation project was a priority for the government.

“It is encouraging that more companies are investing in the environment as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes,” the minister said.
