The top 10 remained nearly unchanged Wednesday in the last FIFA world rankings before next month’s World Cup in Germany.
The same 10 teams occupy the top places, with only minor adjustments in the rankings released by soccer’s world governing body.
Brazil, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands remained 1-2-3. Mexico moved up to fourth place, with the United States dropping from fourth into a tie for fifth with Spain.
Portugal and France swapped spots. Portugal improved to seventh and France slipped to eighth. Argentina remained No. 9 and England stayed in 10th.
The World Cup opens on 9 June in Munich with hosts Germany facing Costa Rica.
The next FIFA rankings will be released three days after the 9 July World Cup final in Berlin.
The new rankings will have a different look. FIFA is changing its calculation system, awarding points on matches over the last four years instead of matches over the last eight.
The new rankings will also take into account results in the 64 World Cup games.
Malta drops a further two places
Meanwhile, Malta has dropped a further two places when cvompared to the previous month’s ranking list.
It is now occupying 125th place. The April list placed Malta as 123rd, a place now taken by Liechtenstein.
