There will be a massive information campaign on the euro changeover in the coming weeks (TMID, 16 May).
It is imperative that this campaign is as widespread as possible, and it should cover all aspects of the transition that Malta will have to make within just 18 months or so.
One suggestion I humbly make is that the campaign is schools should, if possible, be even bigger.
I remember the transition we made from pound to lira in 1972. I was at school then, and I remember having plastic coins to play with. All this helped me understand the new system better than my parents did, although I was still eight years old then.
In fact, I was the one who “taught” them, although I must say that it was hard work as my mother and father continued to call the five cents coin a shilling for many years afterwards.
But still, this goes to prove that children have a big part to play. If children, who are more open to new ideas and to learning, grasp the new system, it will be much easier for all of us to get used to the euro.
