What The fans are saying

Malta Independent Saturday, 20 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Well, the Eurovision is here with us once again. As we settle down in front of our screens this evening with our bags of crisps and peanuts to munch away our

anxiety before the voting begins, the fans are still busy blogging away with their often merciless comments. Josanne Cassar brings you some excerpts from the message board about Malta’s entry on www.doteurovision.com

About whether Malta can ever win:

“Every year I have my fingers crossed for Malta but I’ve come to the realisation that Fabrizio is his own worst enemy. How is it (that) he seems to crack under the pressure. He seems ok enough to win Maltasong and then the nerves set in and he never seems to come back. Malta you sent the right song and right performer last year, this year the truth is you sent a nice enough young fella but a fella who was and still is, an amateur. However Malta my heart is still behind you... good luck.” Aussie girl

“When is Malta ever going to win???” JohninDublin

“If Chiara re-enters the contest again maybe??? Personally I would love to see Malta win! And it will happen eventually!” Swisha

“It will surely happen, after all, they’ve managed 4 Top 3 results in under 20 contests, that’s quite the record for a non-winning country. Fabulous Norway had to wait 25 years, Finland and Portugal a lot more...” S-s-s-sild

About the song:

“This really might be the year for Malta ... been saying it all along, but after all rehearsal reports it’s getting even more likely. Where every up-tempo tune in this contest has the most ridiculous gimmicks prepared distracting from their songs, Malta remains with the most sunny, catchy mainstream song of the contest with not to much going on on stage. I think this combination might just work very well in a year of gimmick overkill. The song is perfect cut for ESC, but even outside it, it has some relevance, I think.” Ben NL

“I presume you’ve never listened past the 3 second piano intro?” Hard Rock Harrowlujah

“Harrow.........it’s not that bad: maybe too common.” made in malta

“made in malta........it’s that bad: too repetitive and cheesy.” Hard Rock Harrowlujah

“Don’t know what state the charts are in in NL if Ben thinks it has some relevance outside ESC!!”

“I warned about this long time ago... it is a layer of cheese combined with lemonade.” euroUSA-SEVEZILLA

“This song is as cheeeeeesy as it gets. Goes so over the line, I kinda love it... Can’t bear to listen to it much though.” gnu

“Malta... unfortunately... I like Fabrizio, but that song to my ears is sooo plasticky and... well... fake...”

About Fabrizio’s rehearsals:

“I might be impossible to please Fabrizio-wise, but this seemed rather badly performed to me.” S-s-s-sild

“I think the backing vocalist must be tuned down a lot based on this clip.” ToreG

“Ouch, seems that Fabrizio of Malta was slightly off-key most of the time...” Kurt_N

“He got some decent reviews, I think he’ll do OK.” Jeremy

“He sounded quiet good for someone who’s been out and partying till the wee hours!!” Frank@Athens

“Must be something wrong with the sound on the clips I’ve seen then.” Kurt_N

“I like this ‘Fabrizio of Malta’ it has a royal nuance in it.” Marco

“He was slightly off-key, but the biggest problem seems to be that the backing vocalist... is higher than the main vocal from Fabrizio at times. But these things can be solved on several rehearsals. Apart from that I found the dance routine/choreography very standard compared to what we have seen in the semi which most of the time have been either ridiculously OTT or original nice choreography.” ToreG

“Great rehearsals for Malta. It comes across well and very powerful.” Frank@Athens

“Frank, you’re going to have to come and prove we’re watching the same rehearsals here...” Nick D.

More about the song:

“Malta has a very good song which makes you want to dance.” Nicos

“No comment” Yiorgos

“Malta’s song is rubbish.” andycarter

“Malta always gets away with bubble-gum.” Jacob Mouritz Olsen

“Bad song! There were far away better songs from Malta.” Jérôme _ Genève

About Fabrizio:

“Viewing the pics of Malta... Fabrizio so shouldn’t wear green!” Andy.be

“Fabrizio shouldn’t be wearing ANYTHING!” Camilla dSC, Islington

“lol.... you fancy him?” Andy.be

“Phwoar! Baby! Yeah! If I was 30 years younger, I’d be on the next flight to Malta.” Camilla dSC, Islington

About Malta’s placing:

“Monday – Malta’s first rehearsal. Do you think bookies are right about Malta? They are predicting a 23rd place.” made in malta

“Sounds about right, and somewhat generous.” Jeremy

“Definitely not. I think Malta will be top 15 at least.” Jonas

“Sounds about right as of now.” Alexander-NL

“Well, I actually like the Maltese song.” Yair

“But I want to wait to see what Fab has up his sleeve as a gimmick – it won’t be him or the song winning, but I’m sure he’ll do anything to distract from both those aspects of the entry.”

About whether I DO sounds like an Abba song:

“If Malta wins it will be a truly awful winner. If a Swedish-sounding song should win I hope it’ll be Sweden!” Kurt_N

“Estonia and Malta are far more Abbaesque than Sweden 2006.” CAT

“Estonia is ‘Does your mother know’, Malta is ‘Give me your love’ (Fame 2).” Kurt_N

Talk returns to Fabrizio’s looks as fans continue speculating:

“I agree Malta is such a dark horse!” DorisEuro

“He’s more like a pony, really.”

S-s-s-sild

“love Malta’s song. My 2nd fave at the moment!!” eurofandave

“I’ll put Malta in the category too. Overrated and hyped by the fans.”
