Squash: First Team-time event held at Marsa

Malta Independent Saturday, 20 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The first Malta Squash team-time tournament was held last Saturday at the Marsa Sports & Country Club.

Most of the players taking part had never experienced such a format and were surprised that after 20 minutes of non-stop squash they were feeling quite exhausted!

The team around Alex Scerri proved too strong for the other teams and were comfortable, but still out of breath, winners. Martin Zammit and Gordon Farrugia, taking part in his first ever squash tournament, helped take Scerri to his second title in three weeks. Scerri will now be hoping to make it a hat trick of tournament wins at next month’s Malta Open.

The match of the tournament was the play-off for second and third place between team Cefai, consisting of Cecilia Farrugia, Michelle Azzopardi and team captain Martin Cefai and team Cuschieri, consisting of Gail Dunkerley, John Cuschieri and team captain and Marsa Squash president Charles Cuschieri.

The final match between John Cuschieri, one of the promising young junior players, and Cecilia Farrugia would determine the outcome of the match.

Cuschieri had to make sure that Farrugia did not win by more than 10 points and so secure second place for his team. After 20 nail biting minutes, team Cuschieri managed to hold on to their lead and finished the match 13 points ahead of team Cefai.

Malta Squash secretary Liz Said presented the winning trophies to the happy winners and thanked everyone involved at the Marsa Club for their help and support. An after tournament buffet for players and guests followed the presentation with the unanimous request to hold another team-time tournament as soon as possible.
