Women In business

Malta Independent Monday, 22 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

I am pleased that an organisation such as the Malta Association of Women in Business exists in Malta, tackling such issues which were highlighted (TMID, 19 May). It is high time that subjects such as these are addressed with no obstacles from authority who know not as much as they should do on these issues due to a list of hindering excuses, misunderstanding, connections, the fact that ‘it’s not my problem’ and lots of red tape.

I wish this organisation every success in its endeavours as Malta is currently welcoming foreigners, foreign investments and tourism (which on many an occasion leads a person to wish to settle in the country) and unless these matters are rectified a woman will not wish to come and live here, live a life, work, have her own business, etc. as currently it is virtually impossible.

I have lived here for over two years and left everything in England for a better life. From professional services and people, to the service industry, employment regulations, reverse attitudes, non-cooperation and the fact that it takes so long for things to get done, Malta will not move forward. This may sound a little harsh but it is reality. It is not a safe place for women on their own for many reasons and it really should stop sooner rather than later.

In many parts of the world women are taking over businesses, running their own and striving and there is not a man in sight. After all, as they say in England, if you want something done – ask a busy woman.
