Malta Independent Tuesday, 30 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino raised a breach of privilege complaint in parliament yesterday against a report carried in l-orrizzont last Thursday.

According to the report, members of the opposition were constantly interrupting Mr Pullicino during the adjournment on Wednesday because his allotted time was up.

Mr Pullicino pointed out that the report twisted reality and was not true.

Opposition Leader Alfred Sant also raised a breach of privilege complaint against Mr Pullicino yesterday. Dr Sant said Mr Pullicino insulted him in an unacceptable manner on Wednesday after parliament had adjourned.

After Dr Sant spoke, Mr Pullicino immediately raised another breach of privilege complaint against Dr Sant on the grounds that he was twisting reality.

Dr Sant called for a point of order and said that Mr Pullicino cannot call for a breach of privilege complaint against a previous breach of privilege.

Mr Pullicino should have brought up this breach of privilege complaint while he was speaking and not after another one was brought up, added Dr Sant.

Mr Pullicino pointed out that he did not insult Dr Sant on Wednesday after parliament was adjourned.

Dr Sant called for another point of order and repeated that Mr Pullicino raised a breach of privilege complaint after his and that it should have been brought up by Mr Pullicino while he was speaking.

Mr Pullicino raised his breach of privilege against Dr Sant and explained that after he finished speaking during the adjournment, Dr Sant verbally attacked him outside parliament. Dr Sant called for a ruling on the matter, claiming that a breach of privilege complaint cannot be raised on a previous breach of privilege complaint.
