Malta Independent Thursday, 1 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Malta Handball Association was founded in 1995 and became a full member of the European Handball Federation in March 1996. A few months later it also gained recognition within the International Handball Federation.

Since its foundation the Association had between four and six Clubs participating in its competitions with around 400 players. These clubs normally form the men’s and women’s teams, the promotion teams as well as the junior teams.

The Association also organises the Men and Women league competition, the KO competition and also the Promotion leagues. The season finishes with the Super Cup League game. It also includes the Junior League and a number of tournaments for schools – boys and girls. During the summer a Beach Handball tournament is also organised.

The National Team participated in the EHF Challenge Trophy Tournament last year in Ireland and finished fourth after beating England and Ireland.

At junior level Malta participated in the FISEC Games in Spain in 2005 and this year it will take part in the Hungary Games.

All the competitions are sponsored for the second year running by APS Bank and thanks to this sponsorship the Association is planning to organise an International Tournament in December this year. Teams from Monaco, Cyprus Scotland and England have been invited.

The Malta Handball Association works with the Malta Olympic Committee in helping the national team in its preparations to take part in the International Arena.
