The Biological Conservation Research Foundation (BICREF), on the occasion of Environment Day, said it wanted to stress the importance of conservation research and management toward safeguarding biodiversity and natural resources.
Since the first environment-related conference in Stockholm in 1972, the world has had to face increasing problematic issues linked to our natural environment and our quality of life, the foundation said.
BICREF is an environmental NGO active in assisting research on coastal and offshore biodiversity while undertaking regular surveys in coastal conservation areas and delivering training courses on the subject of biodiversity conservation.
This foundation believes that accurate knowledge paves the way to improved actions toward prevention of further environmental damage and conservation.
“Malta’s ever-diminishing land area cover for natural biodiversity is a clear indication that our terrestrial environment is soon becoming totally urbanised.
“Both our marine and terrestrial natural resources need safeguarding for future generations and this can no longer remain a dream but needs immediate considerations and effective actions,” the foundation said in a statement yesterday.
The foundation said that everyone should give the planet a helping hand by using less and showing more respect to the resources available.
