BICREF On Environment Day

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Biological Conservation Research Foundation (BICREF) would, on this year’s Environment Day (celebrated today), like to stress the importance of conservation research and management toward safeguarding biodiversity and natural resources. Since the first environment related conference in Stockholm in 1972, the world has had to face increasing problematic issues linked to our natural environment and our quality of life.

Malta’s ever diminishing land area cover for natural biodiversity is a clear indication that our terrestrial environment is soon becoming totally urbanised. Both our marine and terrestrial natural resources need safeguarding for future generations and this can no longer remain a

dream but needs immediate considerations and effective actions.

We should all give this planet earth a helping hand by using less, respecting more what we have been given to use wisely and protect all natural resources that have taken thousands or millions of years to develop. May we not end with just a hand full of sand.

Any one interested in joining BICREF’s work and training can contact BICREF at [email protected] or write to: BICREF, PO Box 30, Hamrun.
